Pathankot, October 24

RRMK Arya Mahila Mahavidyalya, Pathankot, held a one day national workshop on Indian classical music and Gurmat sangeet here on Wednesday.

The event, which attracted music connoisseurs from nearby cities, was jointly organised by principal Dr Gurmeet Kaur and head of the department of classical music Dr Narendra Kaur.

Dr Gurnam Singh, head of the department of Gurmat sangeet and Dean, Punjabi University, was the chief guest. Pathankot SDM Amit Mahajan, too, was present. Scores of classical music experts from government college, Amritsar; RR Bawa College, Batala; Pandit Mohan Lal SD College, Gurdaspur; and Punjabi University, Patiala; were present.

The similarities between classical music and Gurman sangeet were discussed threadbare.

“Classical music is not just any type of common music as it is designed all together in a unique way from the general songs or beats we often hear. It is more intricate for our brain to process. Decades have passed but human suffering has remained one big constant through the ages. Classical music has the power to quench mental anguish, and it is that form of art which is very easily accessible and has instantaneous effects on one's mind. It is of interest to note that every element in this universe originates from a sound vibration; hence it is no wonder that music can harness nature – from trees and animals to the human mind,” opined Dr Narendra Kaur.
