Girls being sensitised to menstrual health

Amritsar, October 24

While the ‘unease’ around the subject of menstrual hygiene is gradually being shunned, in Punjab, the topic largely remains unaddressed as young and teenage girls, especially from rural areas, are still unaware of its significance. Missiondeep, an NGO that works to educate the needy girls, has taken up the task of educating young girls about menstrual hygiene.

With 250 girls as its students, the NGO has tied up with Shubh Karya, another NGO that works in the area of women welfare, to distribute free sanitary napkins, conduct workshops and health camps on menstrual health. “Girls do not open up on the subject easily despite consistent efforts from our side to make them at ease. There are several health complications that might arise early if menstrual health is not taken seriously. So, our efforts are on to make them discuss their problems, let them know about solutions and educate them about hygiene standards and practices to follow,” said Amrita, coordinator, Missiondeep, in the city.

Recently, an awareness camp was held by students of Government Medical College where they told girls about the healthy practices to follow during periods and other aspects of menstrual health. “The biggest roadblock is that the girls do not have access to quality sanitary napkins. With Shubh Karya and other collaborators, we are trying to give them access to low cost sanitary napkins,” added Amrita.
