A survivor of the horrendous train accident and kin of those who lost their loved ones, flanked by SAD-BJP leaders, handed over a complaint to the authorities concerned at the Mohkampura police station, seeking registration of a case against Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu and Dasehra event organiser Mithu Madan. SAD general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia accompanied the complainants.

SHO Avtar Singh accepted the complaint and issued a diary number. He said the matter was already under investigation and the case would be registered after a thorough inquiry.

Complainant Lakhbir Singh of Maqboolpura said he got his arm fractured in the accident as he rescued some people from the fast approaching DMU train on that fateful day. He asserted that the accident was avoidable. “Had chief guest Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu arrived at the programme in time, the programme would have ended without any hassle,” he said.

He termed the compensation as an attempt to silence the hurt people.

Ram Bilas, who lost his son and has another son in a hospital, questioned, “Can anybody kill his or her child for Rs 5 lakh? The loss is immense and can never be compensated.”

They demanded registration of a case, Rs 1 crore compensation and a government job each to the families of the victims.

Akali leaders, including former speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, former minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, Virsa Singh Valtoha, Harmeet Singh Sandhu and others were present.

In addition, BJP leader Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, BJP national secretary Tarun Chug, district BJP president Anand Sharma and former district BJP president Rajesh Honey were also present.
