Amritsar, October 24

Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has announced that an industrial training institute (ITI) will be opened near Ram Tirath that is dedicated to Valmiki. Sidhu said Rs 10 crore would be released by the Chief Minister to establish the institute, facilitating the youth from the nearby rural areas to opt for vocational professional courses.

Addressing the gathering at a state-level function to mark the birth anniversary of Valmiki, Sidhu also called out political leader for playing ‘petty’ politics in the name of the victims of the recent train accident at Joda Phatak. “Instead of helping the effected people’s families, politics is being done for personal gains.”

MLA Rajkumar Verka too criticised the Centre’s "failure" to provide any benefit to the Valmiki community despite collecting funds through Swacch Bharat movement. “The Central Government as amassed over Rs 25,000 crore through Swacch Bharat cess and spent Rs 87,000 crore on its advertisement, but not a even single penny has been spent for the benefit of the community that is engaged in the work of cleaning up waste as sweepers. They are forced to work under inhumane conditions and also face the wrath of poverty and class division," he added.
